Can you make use of it directly in a sponge?

We do not recommend so, since it is specifically designed for dishwashers.
Can it be used on all types of tableware?

Although most tableware can be cleaned with the D-2, we recommend refraining from using a dishwasher to clean wood, gold leaf, lacquer and delicate crystal glasses.
