Announcing the Release of Jigger Lotion in Kenya

Jigger disease, also known as Tungiasis, is a parasitic skin infection caused by the female jigger Tunga penetrans. This parasite burrows into the skin, usually on the feet but sometimes affecting other parts of the body, to lay its eggs. The infection is commonly transmitted through contact with contaminated soil or sand, especially in areas where people walk barefoot. Jigger disease is a significant issue in over 20 countries worldwide, with an estimated 2 million cases reported in Kenya alone. Without proper treatment, the infection can progress unnoticed, leading to serious complications such as abscesses, secondary infections, gangrene, and disfigurement.

Until now, no effective treatment for jigger disease had been developed, and the traditional remedy involved removing the jiggers with safety pins, a painful process. In response to this issue, SARAYA has identified effective insecticidal ingredients and leveraged its expertise in skincare technology to create an innovative lotion.

On August 5th, Saraya Kenya introduced its new Jigger Lotion, a new lotion treatment, which requires only a small amount to cover the affected area and is applied twice a week for two weeks on the affected area. The event took place at a hotel located 1.5 hours north of Nairobi, close to the area most affected by jigger disease in the country.

At the event, the new treatment was praised as a "Pin-less & Painless" breakthrough compared to traditional remedies. Guests expressed a strong desire for its prompt adoption, and the Deputy Secretary announced that monitoring of jigger disease would be added to the health ministry’s dashboard. The gathering, which saw participation from various NGOs, patients, and a total of 250 attendees, included the Japanese Ambassador and the Deputy Governor of Muranga County. 

The product received regulatory approval as a Medical Device in 2021. With the Saraya Uganda factory obtaining ISO 13485 certification in January 2024, manufacturing in Africa has now become possible.

In the future, we aim to strengthen our partnership with NGOs and aid organizations to advance the dissemination of this product for those suffering from jigger disease. We believe that by working together, we can raise awareness, provide support to individuals in need, and ultimately enhance their quality of life. Our commitment to fighting jigger disease will drive us to implement effective strategies and reach as many people as possible who need this innovative treatment.
